I knew it was over when I saw individually packaged gourmet cupcakes at the Neighborhood Walmart Grocery. The cupcake craze has reached saturation and it’s on the way down. Elaborate cupcakes with gourmet ingredients selling for $4 or more per treat were all the rage in June 2011 when Crumbs Bake Shop, a New York-based chain went public on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Trading for shares of the tiny tasty cakes started at $13 and are now down to $1.70 per share (which won’t even get you an Apple Cobbler cupcake from their site!)
The Wall Street Journal says the market is crashing and demand is flat. Keep your radar on for the next big trend and remember to get out before the thrill is gone.
PS – Gourmet or not, this is my favorite way to eat a cupcake. Behold, the cupcake sandwich.
