Everybody likes free stuff. Procter & Gamble recently gave away more than 40,000 of their products spanning 25 brands in Manhattan in an old-fashioned giveaway program. They also plan to go door-to-door with free samples. No movie tie-ins, no viral video attempt…just try this free thing, you might like it. Will it work?
Product trial is the holy grail for consumer-goods companies. Twitter can’t put a bar of soap in your shower or a fabric softener sheet in your dryer. Most of us don’t break away from the old reliable brands until there’s a major problem with the product. But if it’s in my hand and free? Okay, I’ll try it.
