Fridge is located just across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. We know and love seafood here. But many consumers are reticent to try new kinds of seafood when dining or shopping.
Sam Dean with Bon Appetit Magazine thinks he knows the reason why. Too many fish have old fashioned, terrible-sounding names. Chub? Smelt? Loach? Scrod? Yuk.
Other fish have changed their names to great success. Orange Roughy was once called Slimehead and Chilean Sea Bass was known as Toothfish. Which sounds tastier to you, Scrod or New England Whitefish? Time for a change my fishy friends.
Can you make something sound newer, fresher, tastier and more appealing simply by changing the name? Maybe. Burger King’s fish sandwich is now a “Premium Alaskan Fish” sandwich but it’s made with boring old Pollack. What’s on your menu that could use a name change?
